The Imperial Vanguard is the house of Shield soldiers that excels in
single combat, whether it be to spread the glory of the Vashnarian
Shield, or to bring justice to criminals outside Cyrene's walls. All
Shield soldiers will enter the Vanguard, as some skill in personal
combat is expected, but only those with indomitable will and
determination will rise through the Vanguard's ranks to take up the
mantle of the Myrmidons.
Class Divisions
----------------
The Vanguad divides Sapience's classes into 5 categories based on their
overarching styles or approaches toward combat. This does not imply that
classes within each division use the same tactics or abilities, but
rather refers to general mindsets and tactics used to survive those
classes. Mastering one class of the division will not necessarily
prepare you for another class in the same division, but lessons learned
from one will apply to the others. The divisions are as follows:
DIVISION 1: Monk, Druid, Dragon, DWB
These classes do considerable damage and break limbs quickly, setting
opponents up for powerful prone finishers, but usually with minimal
hindrance.
DIVISION 2: S&B, DSL, Blademaster, Sentinel
These classes slowly prep limbs towards devastating prone finishers,
often with significant affliction support, and often with an Impale step
that allows a chance for escape.
DIVISION 3: Serpent, Apostate, Bard
These classes specialize in affliction combat, using precise setups to
inflict debilitating locks upon their opponents, or utilizing other
affliction-based kills.
DIVISION 4: Priest, Alchemist, Occultist, 2H
These classes specialize in momentum-based offenses, quickly outpacing
healing or curing ability the longer they are allowed to attack,
requiring dedicated hindrance or periodic escapes to mitigate their
progress.
DIVISION 5: Magi, Sylvan, Jester, Shaman
These classes specialize in "trick-based" offenses or other unusual
strategies/abilities that don't fit into the other divisions. Direct
experience fighting each class and each strategy is often necessary to
defeat them.
Rules and Qualifications
-------------------------
- Soldiers earn 1 point for a loss and 2 points for a win against an
opponent.
- The opponent must be at least 50% of the soldier's might.
- The soldier may fight the same individual multiple times, but only
once per caldendar year.
- It is the soldier's responsibility to ask for these to be recorded.
- Fights must be recorded by the Strategos or one of his aides via:
- Deathsight History
- Combat rankings
- Direct observation
- Message from Senator or Minister to the Strategos (not an aide)
(Message must include the class of the opponent, and who won)
- Rampage victories are worth 5 points.
- Rampage/FFA wins must consist of at least 3 participants in the finale
and be witnessed by a Shield officer or aide. If none are present, a
Senator or Minister can vouch for a soldier's victory in a message to
the Strategos.
- Duels are encouraged and counted, but woe to he caught teaming an
opponent for Vanguard points! (Save that for Phalanx)
- Honesty is expected from Phalanx soldiers. Any attempt to game or
cheat the system will incurr loss of points at the Strategos's
discretion.
- Improvement is expected. Though full points are awarded for losses, if
it becomes clear a Phalanx soldier is making no attempts to improve and
is merely gathering points through repeated losses, points may be
removed at the Strategos's discretion.
- Questions or clarifications should be referred to the Strategos.
Ranks
------
Members of the Vanguard are promoted at certain thresholds, depending on
total points, points in categories, or other criteria. Each promotion
comes with a house favour, and sometimes more material rewards.
Soldiers' rankings and point totals are tracked in Shield Project 646.
